Jerry Jones Rules Out Midseason Firing for Brian Schottenheimer

The Dallas Cowboys suffered a historic 33-30 overtime home defeat against the Arizona Cardinals, dropping their record to 3-5. Dallas squandered a 14-point lead twice, including a 24-10 advantage with just 14:20 left in regulation, marking the first time in franchise history the team has lost a home game when leading by 14 or more points in the fourth quarter.

Jerry Jones Addresses Coaching Future

Following the disappointing loss, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked by CBS Sports Headlines if he plans to make a coaching change. Jones firmly stated that firing head coach Brian Schottenheimer midseason is not under consideration.

Jones explained that the team’s struggles fall on the entire organization rather than just the coaching staff. In his 38 years of ownership, Jones has only made one in-season coaching change, dismissing Wade Phillips during the 2010 campaign, and he does not see a repeat of that situation happening now.

The Cowboys currently hold a 10-14-1 record under Schottenheimer and have struggled to string together consecutive wins in 2026. Jones emphasized that numerous individuals contributed to the collapse against Arizona, describing the outcome as a collective failure rather than a reflection of a single leader.

Team Accountability and Defensive Struggles

Quarterback Dak Prescott defended his coach after the match, criticizing anyone who attempts to place the blame squarely on one individual as being weak and cowardly. Prescott noted that the responsibility rests on everyone who steps onto the field, as well as the coaching and support staff.

Schottenheimer also accepted his share of the responsibility as head coach while highlighting that the team must look for positive takeaways from the first half and build on them as the season continues. Defensively, Dallas struggled to contain the Cardinals, allowing backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to throw three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Cardinals running back Tyler Allgeier added to the defensive woes by racking up 191 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, becoming the first player in the league this season to record multiple runs of 50 yards or more in a single contest.
