Alexander Zverev Shares Thoughts on Closing in on World Number One

Alexander Zverev is poised to become the 30th man in the history of the Open Era to claim the world number one ranking. Capitalizing on Jannik Sinner ending his season early and Carlos Alcaraz’s five-month absence, the German player has secured two Grand Slam titles and reached another final.

Reaching the Apex of Tennis

While peers like Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz have shared differing perspectives on his rise, Zverev spoke with Tennis TV to discuss what the prestigious title means to him. Reflecting on his childhood aspirations, he noted that watching major finals with his brother sparked a desire to compete for the biggest trophies and feel like one of the best players globally.

“And, I think being number one is such a huge honour because it means you didn’t just win one tournament. It means that you’ve been playing consistently the best tennis in the world for an entire year, whoever has the best season in the world for an entire year,” Zverev stated.

“And I think that is one of the most special things that you can do in our sport,” he added.

Upcoming Matches in Vienna

Zverev is currently competing at the Vienna Open, where he looks to improve upon last year’s result when he lost the final to Sinner in a three-set match. Speaking about playing in a German-speaking region after a long season, he joked, “Yeah, if I don’t have to talk to all of you guys then maybe! [laughs].”

He continued by praising the atmosphere, stating that playing tennis there is fun because the fans offer strong support and he enjoys the city.

Zverev needs to win only two matches in Vienna to officially confirm himself as the new world number one, starting with his opening-round fixture against Spanish talent Martin Landaluce. Should he fall short in Austria, the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals provide additional opportunities to secure the milestone.
