Liverpool endured their first Champions League defeat of the campaign as Fenerbahce staged a second-half turnaround to secure a 3-2 victory in Istanbul. Following a recent domestic loss to Arsenal, Andoni Iraola’s side failed to protect their advantage despite twice leading during the encounter.
Deflected Strikes Trade Early Blows
The visiting side started with intent, testing Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson through an early attempt from Victor Munoz. Liverpool broke the deadlock when teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni capitalized on a poor headed clearance, slotting a low deflected effort past Ederson to claim his first goal for the senior team.
Dirk Kuyt’s side responded forcefully. After Irfan Can Kahveci struck the crossbar, the hosts found an equalizer when Mason Greenwood’s free-kick took a significant deflection, leaving goalkeeper Alisson helpless. Greenwood threatened again before the interval, but Alisson produced a save to keep the scores level.
Second-Half Turnaround in Istanbul
Ederson was called into action early in the second period, denying strikes from Bradley Barcola and Virgil van Dijk, while Archie Brown missed opportunities at the other end. Iraola then turned to his bench, introducing Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak. The adjustment worked instantly, with Gakpo sending a deep cross from the left wing for Isak to power home a header across goal for his first European strike with the club.
The lead vanished quickly due to errors at the back. Gakpo misjudged N’Golo Kante’s incoming delivery and flicked the ball toward the far post, giving Brown a simple close-range finish. Fenerbahce completed the comeback when Brown sent a cross into the penalty area, where Vedat Muriqi held off three defenders to direct a header past Alisson into the bottom-left corner.
Late attempts by Van Dijk, Gakpo, and Isak failed to produce an equalizer, while Matteo Guendouzi missed the target from long range with Alisson caught away from his goal. Liverpool now turn their attention back to domestic action, with a trip to face Crystal Palace scheduled next.
