Tigers Backed Out of Skubal Trade with Brewers, Report Says

Following the Milwaukee Brewers’ World Series championship, new reports have shed light on a close call at the MLB trade deadline involving Detroit Tigers star pitcher Tarik Skubal. According to an article by Andy McCullough of The Athletic, the Brewers made a competitive offer that the Tigers accepted in principle before ultimately pivoting to a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Nearly Completed Brewers Package

The Brewers front office believed a trade was essentially finalized after offering two top-100 position players, infielder Luis Pena and utility player Jett Williams, alongside outfielder Josh Adamczewski. The Tigers were searching for pitching, but Milwaukee was unwilling to include rookie left-hander Logan Henderson in the discussions. When Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris requested their final package, this stood as Milwaukee’s strongest offer before Harris contacted the Dodgers.

Moments later, the Brewers noticed outfielder Zyhir Hope pulled from a Double-A game, prompting a call from Harris to inform them he was taking a different offer. Milwaukee general manager Matt Arnold expressed appreciation for the communication, as reported by McCullough. “I appreciated the s— out of that,” Arnold said. “He was very transparent.” The timely notification allowed Milwaukee to adjust and instead acquire St. Louis reliever JoJo Romero and starter Dustin May, though they missed out on landing an ace.

The Final Trade and Future Outlook

The Tigers ultimately accepted a package from the Dodgers featuring Zyhir Hope, who shares a similar ranking to Williams, along with injured right-hander River Ryan and High-A pitching prospect Brady Smith. While the Brewers’ offer arguably carried stronger value on paper, it lacked the immediate pitching help Detroit sought to bridge the gap until their lower-level pitching prospects mature. Much of the long-term evaluation of the Tigers’ decision rests on whether River Ryan can overcome his injury history and fulfill his potential as a frontline starter or dominant reliever.

The situation highlights the complex balancing act front offices face between addressing positional needs and maximizing overall talent value. While acquiring Luis Pena and Jett Williams could have bolstered an already strong farm system featuring Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark, securing cost-controlled pitching remains exceptionally difficult across Major League Baseball. The transparent communication from Harris ensured the Brewers were not left scrambling blindly in the final minutes before the deadline.

The report provides closure on the ongoing trade discussions surrounding Skubal as the offseason officially begins for the organization.
