Alex Eala Given Boost Despite Tokyo Open Quarter-Final Loss

Alex Eala has received significant encouragement following her quarter-final exit at the Tokyo Open. Despite recent struggles on the WTA Tour, the Filipina player performed strongly against the eventual champion.

Tokyo Open Performance

Eala has experienced her most successful season in 2026, capturing her first WTA title at the Washington Open, advancing to the fourth round at Wimbledon, and entering the top 20 rankings. However, she has faced difficulties maintaining that momentum since the US Open, securing only three victories out of seven WTA Tour matches.

Two of those defeats came against Diana Shnaider, including their recent quarter-final clash in the Japanese capital where Shnaider rallied from a set down to win 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Shnaider ultimately claimed the Tokyo Open title—her first tournament victory of 2026—by defeating Leylah Fernandez in the final.

Although other players pushed Shnaider to three sets, Eala came closest to eliminating her, standing just two points away from a straight-sets victory. This narrow margin provides a strong morale boost for Eala, highlighting that the Tokyo Open marked her most impressive tournament performance since the US Open.

Hong Kong Open Outlook

Eala aims to carry her Tokyo form into her final tournament of the 2026 season at the Hong Kong Open. While Shnaider is absent from the Hong Kong draw, Eala faces several other challenges in her pursuit of a second WTA title.

Alycia Parks serves as Eala’s first-round opponent. Based on rankings, her subsequent potential opponents include Tereza Valentova, Xinyu Wang, Maria Sakkari, and Sorana Cirstea. Eala has not faced Sakkari previously, holds 1-1 head-to-head records against Parks, Wang, and Cirstea with wins in their most recent encounters, but has never defeated Valentova, having lost to her at the 2025 Japan Open and the 2026 Qatar Open.

Valentova, aged 19, achieved a career-high ranking of world number 42 in May following a breakthrough season, though injuries and a dip in form have since dropped her outside the top 80. Eala will face Valentova only if Eala defeats Parks and Valentova overcomes qualifier Himeno Sakatsume in their opening matches.

The main draw of the Hong Kong Open begins on Monday, November 2, with Eala and Valentova scheduled to play their opening matches on Tuesday according to sports.yahoo.com.
