Sheffield Wednesday Appoint Dave Challinor as New Manager

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed former Stockport County boss Dave Challinor as their new manager. He replaces Henrik Pedersen, who was sacked last Sunday after securing just one victory in six League One matches.

Managerial Background and Career Success

The Owls currently sit ninth in the table and are on a winless run of three matches, having drawn once and lost twice. They will face Blackpool at 14:00 GMT on Sunday, with Challinor watching from the stands while interim boss Matt Hamshaw takes charge of the team.

Challinor, a 51-year-old former defender for Bury and Tranmere Rovers, began his managerial career at Colwyn Bay in 2010. He has since earned multiple promotions during his spells with AFC Fylde and Hartlepool. Most recently, he guided Stockport County from the National League to the League Two title within three seasons, while twice leading them to the League One play-offs. He left the Hatters by mutual consent at the end of the 2025-26 season after losing the play-off final to Bolton Wanderers.

Expert Analysis on the Appointment

BBC Radio Sheffield’s Rob Staton reported that Sheffield Wednesday’s new owners wanted to hire a winner who can turn recent draws and defeats into victories. Challinor matches that description with seven promotions on his CV, alongside his League One experience with Stockport County.

His immediate challenge is to deliver effective football and unite a talented individual squad into a cohesive team. With the League One top seven looking strong, Wednesday aims to join the rising group alongside Leicester and MK Dons.

Staton noted that this represents an intriguing next step for Challinor, bringing massive expectations unlike his previous roles at Stockport, Hartlepool, or Fylde. At Sheffield Wednesday, victories are continuously expected in League One, where even managers like Darren Moore faced heavy scrutiny despite a 96-point campaign.

Challinor is expected to bring Clint Hill and Anthony Sweeney onto his coaching staff. Simon Wilson, who previously collaborated with Challinor at Stockport, is believed to have played an instrumental role in facilitating the appointment, making their established working relationship crucial for the future.
