Martin Odegaard’s close-range goal secured a narrow 1-0 win for Arsenal against Hull, sending the Gunners into the international break as the Premier League leaders. The result marked Arsenal’s 34th 1-0 victory under manager Mikel Arteta, equaling their best start to a Premier League season under the Spaniard with 27 points from 10 games, matching their 2022-23 campaign.
VAR Controversy and Law Interpretations
Odegaard’s 72nd-minute winner spared officials from further scrutiny following a controversial video assistant referee decision in the first half. Referee Farai Hallam was sent to the pitchside monitor to review a shirt pull by Nobel Mendy on Kai Havertz, but after starting to describe the foul, the referee overturned the situation for an offside against Havertz.
Former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann told BBC Match of the Day that the foul should have taken precedence over the offside, resulting in a penalty, though he noted the law is ambiguous and open to interpretation. Previous incidents have seen differing outcomes, such as penalties awarded to offside players like Harry Kane and Fabian Schar, contrasted with Dango Ouattara’s disallowed penalty last December. Video assistant referee Michael Oliver determined that offside was the fair outcome because Havertz was the only attacker who had any chance of being involved in the play.
Managerial Reaction and Attacking Efficiency
Despite sitting at the top of the table, Arsenal are currently the lowest scorers among the top four teams and have not scored more than twice in a league match since the opening day of the season. The team has been without injured talisman Bukayo Saka, while players returning from injuries, such as Kai Havertz and Christos Tzolis, have yet to reach their previous form.
Addressing the reliance on single-goal wins, Mikel Arteta explained that the team needs to find ways to be more efficient and pragmatic. Arteta told BBC Sport that his players are sometimes trying to score the perfect goal against low blocks and need to be more chaotic and open to score much earlier and change the course of the game.
Arsenal have won nine of their 10 league games so far and continue their pursuit of back-to-back titles.
