Two-time MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia has sustained two fractures in his right foot following a severe accident during the Qatar Grand Prix sprint race on Saturday. The injury sidelines him for Sunday’s Qatar GP, while his participation in the remaining races of the season remains uncertain as medical staff evaluate whether surgery is necessary.
Crash Details and Medical Evaluation
The incident occurred early in the original race when Gresini Ducati rider Fermin Aldeguer lost control under braking and collided with Bagnaia, launching him high into the air. The crash triggered a red flag and led to a complete restart of the race without Bagnaia, halting what had been his most promising weekend in quite some time. Following an initial examination by MotoGP medical director Dr Angel Charte at the Losail International Circuit medical center, Ducati issued an official statement confirming the diagnosis.
According to the Ducati statement reported by Autosport.com, “Initial medical examinations performed on Pecco Bagnaia at the medical center at the Losail International Circuit have revealed two fractures in his right foot, affecting the fourth and fifth metatarsals.” The team added that Bagnaia would be transferred to Doha Hospital overnight for further evaluations to decide if the fractures necessitate surgery.
Season Outlook and Upcoming Schedule
With only two race weekends left on the MotoGP calendar after the Qatar event, a two-week break before the season-closing Iberian double-header could potentially aid Bagnaia’s recovery. However, there is a possibility that his tenure with Ducati has come to an early end. Bagnaia secured world championships with the manufacturer in 2022 and 2023, and after two challenging seasons, he is scheduled to transition to Aprilia for the following year. Meanwhile, race officials penalized Aldeguer with a double long lap penalty for the restarted race.
