Major League Baseball teams are expected to be aggressive in free agency before a pending lockout, despite uncertainty surrounding the future collective bargaining agreement.

Frenetic November Anticipated

As reported by ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, individuals across Major League Baseball anticipate that offseason activity will pick up as early as next week during the general managers meetings in Las Vegas.

“With a lockout looming on Dec. 1, the consensus across Major League Baseball is that November will be a frenetic month, similar to the lead-up to the 2021 lockout. Free agents will come off the board,” Castillo wrote. “Trades will be made. There will be a flurry of player movement before the league shuts down.”

Motivations for Early Signings

Players have two primary reasons to pursue early agreements in free agency. Securing a contract before the December 1 lockout date resolves their major winter decisions, allowing them to focus entirely on preparing for the upcoming season.

Additionally, because MLB ownership is pushing to implement a salary-cap system, the future landscape of payroll spending remains entirely unpredictable. The MLB Players Association has explicitly stated its strong opposition to a salary cap, creating uncertainty around league finances until a new CBA is finalized.

Market Impact on Top and Tiered Players

Under the existing system, teams face no spending limits. Pitcher Tarik Skubal is projected to sign the largest contract for a pitcher in MLB history, and strong leverage is supported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post and MLB Network, who notes that the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets are considered his most likely suitors.

While elite outliers like Skubal are guaranteed massive paydays regardless of timing, second- and third-tier free agents face greater motivation to act quickly due to CBA unpredictability and potential limitations on future spending money.

Free agency officially opened at 5 p.m. ET, exactly five days following the conclusion of the World Series on October 28. The general managers meetings are scheduled to take place from November 9 to 12 in Las Vegas, while the winter meetings are tentatively set for December 7 to 10 in Orlando, though a prolonged lockout would likely force their cancellation.
