Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer faces an uphill battle to revive his international career after Thomas Tuchel delivered a blunt assessment regarding his absence from England’s latest squad. The 24-year-old was left out for upcoming Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain, with the England head coach stating he misses too many opportunities to impress.
Tuchel Explains Omission and Squad Strategy
Tuchel revealed his decision came after receiving assurances that Palmer was fully fit, yet chose to stick with players who built strong momentum during the previous international camp. As reported by BBC Sport, Tuchel explained that the team has enough number 10s and values the extraordinary impact brought by the players who were present previously.
“We have enough number 10s and we stick to the guys who were in the previous camp, because we were happy with the two and a half weeks we had together,” Tuchel said, adding that competition is fierce and that new players like Josh King have earned their opportunities.
Palmer’s camp was reportedly surprised by the exclusion. However, Tuchel has previously demonstrated that no player is guaranteed a spot under his management, having previously left out high-profile figures such as Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Chelsea Form and Club Perspective
Palmer has experienced a stop-start international career since making his senior debut under former manager Gareth Southgate in November 2023. He has earned 14 caps, scoring two goals and providing one assist, but has featured in only three of Tuchel’s 26 matches in charge.
At club level, Palmer recently scored his 50th league goal for Chelsea in a 2-0 win against Manchester United. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso noted that Palmer had been playing through discomfort and pain before the previous international break, including during a 3-0 defeat at Brentford.
Alonso stated that he has not spoken to Palmer about his international exclusion, noting that their focus remains entirely on club matters. “We have not talked about England. We are focused on Chelsea things, how to help him, how he can become more and more influential,” Alonso told BBC Sport.
Tuchel now has numerous options in attacking midfield, including Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White, Eberechi Eze, and debutant Josh King. Palmer now faces a long road to regain the manager’s trust ahead of England’s next squad announcement in March 2027.
