English Amateur Cricketer Banned for Two Years in Video Cheating Scandal

An amateur cricketer in England received a two-year ban following a cheating scandal that was captured on video during a match. The incident unfolded in July when footage revealed a fielder clicking his fingers to mimic the sound of a bat hitting the ball prior to an appeal.

Investigation and Punishments

The North Yorkshire & South Durham Cricket League initiated a probe into the player and the second-division Saltburn team, dedicating weeks to examining video clips and interviewing participants. The league stated on Friday that charges were subsequently filed against both the player and Saltburn C.C., and both parties admitted to the offenses.

British media identified the suspended player as Brian Devine. His ban from all cricket under the governance of the England and Wales Cricket Board runs through late September 2028. The league specified that the suspension applies to playing, coaching, umpiring, scoring, and managing junior teams.

The Saltburn club faced severe sporting and financial penalties, dropping to division three and facing a 60-point deduction to begin the upcoming season alongside a 300-pound ($400) fine. The league acknowledged the pressure the situation created, particularly for individuals who faced online and in-person abuse, and urged everyone to respect the conclusion of the formal process.

Context and Media Reaction

While cricket has experienced major international controversies such as the 2018 ball-tampering incident resulting in suspensions for three Australian players, as well as various spot-fixing scandals, lower-level village competitions rely heavily on player honesty. At the amateur level, umpires lack video replay systems and depend on trust when players claim catches. An official could easily be deceived into making an out decision if convinced they heard the ball clip an edge.

British media outlets referred to the incident as “Clicky Ponting,” referencing former Australian star Ricky Ponting. Saltburn was approached for comment on Friday regarding the disciplinary actions.
