Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy, reporting $3.5 million in liabilities primarily tied to civil litigation from a high-speed car crash in Texas and allegations of assault brought by a former girlfriend.
Bankruptcy Details and Assets
The legal filing submitted Wednesday in Texas details $677,054 in personal assets, which includes $421,825 designated as deferred compensation. Rice is currently playing in the final year of a four-year rookie contract carrying a total value of $6.5 million, alongside a 2026 base salary of $1.6 million.
The largest single claim against Rice totals $979,837, owed as part of a settlement stemming from his involvement in a 2024 collision in Dallas. That high-speed crash injured multiple individuals and ultimately resulted in a six-game suspension from the NFL.
Ongoing Disputes and Legal History
The 26-year-old athlete is contesting additional potential financial liabilities in pending civil lawsuits, which feature a combined $700,000 from victims of the crash. Another $200,000 is being disputed from claims by his ex-girlfriend, who asserted that he assaulted her on multiple occasions between 2023 and 2025. The NFL did not issue a suspension over the assault accusations.
Regarding the crash, Rice received a sentence of 30 days in jail and five years of probation after pleading guilty to third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. He served an additional 30 days in jail earlier this year following a probation violation due to a positive test for marijuana.
On the field, the former SMU player has recorded 20 receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns this season, following a rookie campaign in 2023 where he tallied 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as the Chiefs captured the Super Bowl.
