Mercedes experienced a challenging qualifying session at the Mexico City Grand Prix before George Russell delivered a late flying lap to secure second place on the grid. Teammate Kimi Antonelli finished fifth in the session and will start fourth on the grid following a penalty for Max Verstappen.
Driver Reactions
George Russell admitted the session was difficult but expressed satisfaction with his final effort. He noted that getting tyres into the correct operating window proved tricky and explained that the team chose a different preparation approach by pushing immediately on their first Q3 lap without a preparation lap. He pointed out that overtaking will prove difficult during the race while managing brake and power unit temperatures.
Kimi Antonelli expressed disappointment with his performance, stating he struggled to find tyre grip during the final qualifying phase and made too many mistakes. Despite qualifying fifth, he remains optimistic about the long run to Turn One and the advantage of having saved a fresh set of Soft tyres.
Management Perspectives
Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Head Toto Wolff highlighted the exceptionally tight margins and noted that tyre preparation differences between the two drivers require analysis. He emphasized that the race will present new challenges regarding strategy and tyre management.
Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin explained that the team dealt with a loose rear end and understeer earlier in the weekend, but made useful setup progress. He added that both competitors are well-positioned to fight for podium finishes and potentially race victories if temperature management is successful.
