San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama delivered a historic performance during Wednesday’s 112-111 victory against the Dallas Mavericks. The center recorded career-highs of 52 points and 23 rebounds, while also contributing eight blocks on the defensive end.
Comparisons to NBA Legends
Following the game, Spurs teammate Dylan Harper drew parallels between Wembanyama and NBA icon Wilt Chamberlain. Harper noted that opposing teams struggle to contain the young star despite implementing various defensive adjustments. “He’s basically Wilt,” Harper told reporters, highlighting Wembanyama’s dominance in the paint, his effectiveness as a screener, and his reliability at the free-throw line.
The statistical achievement places Wembanyama in exclusive company. He and Chamberlain are the only two players in the history of the league to record at least 50 points, 20 rebounds, and eight blocks in a single game.
Resilience and Team Momentum
Harper also likened Wembanyama to Superman, referencing the center’s ability to recover quickly after rolling his ankle early in the fourth quarter. Wembanyama returned to the court just three minutes after the injury to help secure the win. “He’s Superman,” Harper said. “He rolls his ankle and pops right up and acts like nothing happened. I’ve never seen [something] like that, but that’s a testament to how he takes care of his body.”
The Spurs have now secured six consecutive victories following an 0-2 start to the season. Through eight starts, Wembanyama is currently averaging a career-high 29.0 points and 4.5 blocks per game.
