Former Major League Baseball star Mark Teixeira has won a seat in the United States House of Representatives, securing victory in Texas’ 21st congressional district on Tuesday. Running as the Republican candidate, the three-time All-Star defeated Democratic nominee Kristin Hook, a former federal scientist.
Transition to Politics and Election Context
Teixeira is stepping into the House seat previously held by Republican Chip Roy, who chose not to seek re-election. Following his victory, Teixeira expressed enthusiasm for his new legislative role.
“Together, we can build a better future for our families, our neighbors, and every community across Texas 21,” Teixeira said in a statement. “I’m excited to get to work. I will be praying for all of you and for the future of this great nation. God bless Texas, and God bless America.”
The win represented a rare victory for the Republican Party in Texas on Tuesday. Democrats claimed major victories elsewhere in the state, with Gina Hinojosa winning the gubernatorial race and James Talarico flipping a Senate seat.
Teixeira’s Baseball Career and Sports Connections
Before entering politics, the 46-year-old Teixeira built a 14-year career in Major League Baseball. Raised in Maryland, he played college baseball at Georgia Tech before being selected fifth overall in the first round of the 2001 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers. He played his first four and a half seasons in Texas before brief stints with the Atlanta Braves in 2007 and the Los Angeles Angels in 2008.
Prior to the 2009 season, Teixeira signed a long-term free-agent deal with the New York Yankees, where he played out the remainder of his career. Over 14 seasons, he batted .268/.360/.509 (126 OPS+) with 409 home runs and 1,298 RBIs. His accomplishments include five Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers, three All-Star selections, and a World Series championship ring.
Teixeira was one of several recognizable figures from the sports world on Tuesday’s ballot. Elsewhere, former college football coach Tommy Tuberville won the Alabama gubernatorial race, while former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya was defeated in the Minnesota Senate election.
