Roma took an early lead against Manchester United in their Champions League encounter at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening after exploiting a critical midfield giveaway. Argentine forward Matias Soule converted the opening goal in the 18th minute following an error by Red Devils midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
Soule Capitalizes on Midfield Turnover
The decisive opening moment came when Mainoo was caught on the ball in midfield, allowing Roma to launch a swift attack. Evan Mora spotted Soule completely unmarked on the far side of the pitch and picked him out with an accurate diagonal pass. Soule then finished calmly past goalkeeper Senne Lammens to put the visitors ahead, 101 Great Goals reported.
The early goal compounded the difficulties for manager Michael Carrick’s side, who entered the match on a nine-game winless run across all competitions. United were already facing heavy European pressure after losing their prior two Champions League group fixtures against Atletico Madrid and Como.
Conversely, Roma arrived in Manchester with positive momentum following a high-scoring 5-2 Serie A victory against Udinese over the weekend.
