During the first half of the 2026 season, the Atlanta Braves faced a severe injury crisis at the catcher position with both Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy sidelined. To cover the vacancy, the club acquired veteran catcher Austin Wynns from the Anaheim Angels for cash considerations on June 3, temporarily adding him to the major league roster.

Brief Midseason Tenure in Atlanta

Wynns spent just two weeks with Atlanta, recalled on June 4 and granted free agency on June 16 following Baldwin’s return from the injured list. To make room for Wynns, the Braves designated third-string catcher Chadwick Tromp while continuing to rely on Sandy Leon for the majority of playing time behind the plate.

Before arriving in Atlanta, the 35-year-old Wynns had recorded a -47 wRC+ over 43 plate appearances with Sacramento earlier in the year. Over six major league seasons entering 2026, he held a career 74 wRC+ and 0.6 fWAR across 826 plate appearances, having never exceeded 180 plate appearances or 1.0 fWAR in a single campaign.

On-Field Performance and Key Moments

In six appearances for the Braves, Wynns logged a .071/.071/.071 slash line, going 1-for-14 with no walks and one single. Defensive metrics were similarly challenging, as he permitted six stolen bases without throwing out a runner and accumulated -0.3 fWAR in 14 plate appearances with Atlanta.

His sole hit occurred during a 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox, placing runners on the corners with one out. The following day in a 2-1 loss, Wynns flew out with the bases loaded in the second inning, flew out with a go-ahead runner on second in the fourth, and lined out in the seventh before being replaced by pinch-hitter Eli White in the ninth.

Subsequent Stints and Future Outlook

Statcast data noted that Wynns ranked in the 73rd percentile in blocks above average, though he rated below average in framing, pop time, and caught stealing above average. After rejecting an outright assignment from Atlanta, he signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers, eventually appearing in 32 major league plate appearances for Arlington where he posted a .312 wOBA before being outrighted in August and concluding the season in the Chicago Cubs minor league system.

Wynns ended the 2026 season with -0.7 fWAR across 89 total plate appearances and a career-worst 2 wRC+. Turning 36 in December, his future in Major League Baseball remains uncertain as he enters the offseason as a free agent.
