How Ellie Carpenter Became Chelsea’s Surprise Goalscoring Star

When Chelsea struggled at half-time against Roma and desperately needed a goal, manager Sonia Bompastor made the surprising choice to introduce a defender rather than an attacker. Despite some initial doubts from her coaching staff, Bompastor’s trust in Australian full-back Ellie Carpenter quickly paid off.

An Attacking Full-Back With a License to Forward

Carpenter found the back of the net within six minutes of entering the pitch as Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory, marking one of several crucial interventions she has made for the Blues this term. Bompastor recalled that a member of her technical staff questioned the defensive substitution when the team needed goals, but they ultimately laughed about it after the match given Carpenter’s knack for scoring.

As reported by BBC Sport, unbeaten Chelsea currently sit at the summit of the Women’s Super League table after dropping points only in their opening fixture against Aston Villa. Carpenter has featured in the starting lineup for all but one of their league fixtures, registering four goals while operating from a full-back or wing-back role.

During a 6-0 triumph over Charlton, Carpenter opened the scoring in the 13th minute while also leading the squad in tackles with three and ball recoveries with twelve. Statistics show that only Khadija Shaw, Lauren Hemp, and Victoria Pelova have recorded more touches in the opposition penalty area than Carpenter’s 56 this campaign.

Furthermore, only Manchester City winger Hemp and Tottenham player Drew Spence have generated more chances from open play in the Women’s Super League than the Australian defender. Former England striker Ellen White praised Carpenter’s performances on the Women’s Football Weekly podcast, noting that she benefits from the security of her fellow defenders and midfielders, which grants her the freedom to attack.

Carpenter transferred to Chelsea in 2025 from Lyon, where she previously collaborated with Bompastor and captured the Champions League trophy in 2022. Operating frequently on the right wing-back flank this season, Carpenter has teamed up effectively with Lucy Bronze, who shifts inside to form a back three as Chelsea boast the league’s tightest defence with just four goals conceded.

Technical Improvements and Future Impact

Although renowned for her attacking qualities, Carpenter has maintained her defensive responsibilities, ranking second across the squad for successful tackles. During her initial period in the English top flight, critics occasionally pointed out that her crossing could be inconsistent.

However, Bompastor believes the 26-year-old has refined that aspect of her game, contributing one assist alongside her four goals. Carpenter has additionally created 19 chances in the league this season and completed 141 successful passes in the final third, leading the Chelsea squad in that metric.

Bompastor highlighted Carpenter’s consistent excellence, noting her unusual ability to score goals with her left foot as well. The manager praised the defender’s pace, winning mentality, and technical progression in delivering quality crosses and finishing clinically inside the box.

Chelsea return to action as they look to maintain their dominant momentum at the top of the standings.
