Garrett Mitchell prepared for Game 3 of the World Series by practicing catches at Tropicana Field on a Sunday night, balancing his athletic duties with the daily management of Type 1 diabetes. The Milwaukee Brewers center fielder navigates unique challenges during baseball’s biggest moments, including elevated stress, late workout hours, and interrupted routines.
Managing Health on the Big Stage
Mitchell explained that maintaining his health relies heavily on proper hydration, good nutrition, and quality sleep. While a week off between the NL Championship Series and the World Series provided some time to catch up on rest, the outfielder must maintain daily vigilance over his condition.
As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, former Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns noted in 2022 that the team initially needed to understand how Mitchell would handle his health over a demanding professional career. Team officials quickly grew comfortable with his management skills, recognizing him as a rare position player competing at the major-league level with the condition.
Connection to the Diabetic Community
Beyond his defensive skills alongside teammates Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick, Mitchell connects with fans who share his diagnosis or raise funds for treatments and a cure. He expressed that speaking with children and adults dealing with the same health challenges brings him personal fulfillment.
Mitchell experienced only one game departure due to blood sugar levels this season, occurring in mid-September during a quick turnaround from a night game to a day game. Brewers manager Pat Murphy stated that trainers recommended removing him as a precautionary measure due to high blood sugar, an issue that frequently arises during tight schedules.
Mitchell has encountered no issues managing his diabetes throughout the current postseason run. The Brewers concluded their Sunday workout session focusing on live reads and adjusting to how balls ricocheted off the roof markers.
