Eugenio Chacarra enters the first DP World Tour playoff event holding the top spot in the Race to Dubai standings after securing three tournament victories this season. The Spanish golfer will play the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship alongside major champions Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy at Yas Links in Abu Dhabi.
Chacarra Embraces the Challenge
Chacarra has achieved success on the European circuit this year despite playing just one PGA Tour event in Puerto Rico. Speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, he expressed excitement about being grouped with McIlroy for the first time in his career.
“I get a chance to play with Rory, first time playing with Rory,” Chacarra said. “I’ve been watching him play since I was little. He’s one of my idols, so super excited for the opportunity.”
The 26-year-old previously played alongside Justin Rose and Min Woo Lee during his victory at the Delhi Golf Club in India last month, an experience he believes prepared him for the intense atmosphere and passionate fanbase surrounding McIlroy. Chacarra noted that he wants to prove his ability to compete against major champions while learning from them during the round.
Focus on the Marathon Ahead
Chacarra claimed additional titles in Italy and the Netherlands this year, highlighting his tense one-shot victory over Oliver Lindell at the KLM Open in June as his most meaningful triumph due to the challenging windy conditions and pressure.
Despite the high stakes of the playoff tournament and his position at the top of the standings, Chacarra stated that he approaches the event like any other week rather than focusing excessively on the overall points race. He emphasized that his primary goal is to concentrate on his own game, maintain his composure, and treat the tournament as a marathon.
“I’m going to focus on myself,” Chacarra said. “I know I can compete with anyone with how I’m playing. I’m just excited to compete and to learn as much as possible.”
