Kimi Antonelli has made history by becoming Formula 1’s youngest-ever World Champion, securing his maiden title during his sophomore season. As reported by Formula1.com, the Italian driver achieved several historic milestones throughout a stunning 2026 campaign.

Youngest Polesitter and Winner From Pole

Just two rounds into the championship at the Chinese Grand Prix, Antonelli secured his maiden Grand Prix pole position. At 19 years, six months and 18 days old, the Mercedes driver became the sport’s youngest-ever polesitter, easily beating the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 21 during the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.

Later that weekend, Antonelli converted his P1 grid slot into his debut win, making him the youngest driver ever to win from pole position. Max Verstappen continues to hold the record as the sport’s youngest-ever winner overall, having tasted victory at 18 years old.

Championship Records and Winning Streaks

Following a second victory at the Japanese Grand Prix just two weeks later, Antonelli climbed to the top of the drivers’ standings at 19 years, seven months and four days old. This achievement broke the record previously held by Lewis Hamilton, who headed the table aged 22 in 2007.

After converting pole into wins in China and Japan, Antonelli extended his streak to a third consecutive time at Round 4 in Miami. This latest milestone made him the first driver in history to win from their first three pole positions.

Monaco Grand Slam and Home Triumph

Antonelli scored five consecutive victories during the opening stages of the season, culminating in a win at the Monaco Grand Prix. This triumph made him the youngest-ever winner of the famed event and the youngest driver in history to achieve a Grand Slam, having started from pole, set the fastest lap, and led from start to finish.

Later in the season, Antonelli claimed his seventh win at the Italian Grand Prix by charging from the back of the grid at Monza. In front of his home crowd, he became the first Italian to triumph in their home race since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.

Ending Italy’s Long Wait

By clinching the 2026 World Championship, Antonelli ended Italy’s 73-year wait for a new title holder. He is only the third Italian to claim the crown, following Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina in 1950 and Alberto Ascari, who won back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953.

Antonelli claimed the sport’s ultimate record by becoming the youngest-ever World Champion, eclipsing Sebastian Vettel’s previous mark of 23 years, four months and 11 days set with Red Bull in 2010. Furthermore, born in 2006, Antonelli is the first driver born in the 2000s to capture the World Championship, succeeding drivers from the 1990s such as Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
