Major League Baseball announced the recipients of the 2026 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards on Sunday night. Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong claimed his second consecutive National League honor, while the Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks led all franchises by securing three winners each.
Defensive Metrics and Crow-Armstrong’s Historic Season
Crow-Armstrong, who previously won a Gold Glove in 2025 and is expected to be named the 2026 NL Most Valuable Player, delivered elite defensive results over the past season. According to Statcast’s Fielding Runs Value (FRV)—an all-encompassing metric that measures range, arm strength, and catcher blocking and framing—Crow-Armstrong led all major league players with +26 FRV.
His +26 FRV total represents the fifth-highest single-season mark recorded since Statcast introduced the metric in 2016. It also stands as the second-best single-season score by a non-catcher, trailing only shortstop Nick Ahmed’s +28 FRV during the 2018 campaign. Other top performers in Fielding Runs Value for 2026 included JJ Wetherholt (+23 FRV), Bobby Witt Jr. (+17 FRV), Masyn Winn (+17 FRV), and several players tied at +16 FRV.
Award History and Voting Mechanics
The Gold Glove Awards have recognized defensive excellence at each position annually since 1957. In its inaugural year, MLB selected one overall player per position across baseball, before splitting the honors into separate American League and National League categories in 1958. Outfield honors were historically given to three outfielders per league regardless of position, but the awards are now divided specifically into left field, center field, and right field.
The selection process relies on votes cast by major league managers and coaches, which account for 75 percent of the outcome, alongside a 25 percent statistical component. Team personnel are not permitted to vote for players on their own rosters. The finalists revealed prior to the announcement represented the top three vote-getters at each position, as voting concluded before the start of the postseason.
