PITTSBURGH — Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson temporarily exited the Week 8 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers following a heavy hit early in the contest. Watson missed the remainder of that series, where Shedeur Sanders stepped in as his replacement, before returning for the start of Cleveland’s subsequent drive.
The Hit and Penalization
The incident occurred on the game’s third play when Steelers defensive back Jaquan Brisker delivered a high hit to Watson. Officials penalized Brisker for roughing the passer, which awarded the Browns a new set of downs.
The possession ultimately concluded when Steelers rookie defensive backs Robert Spears-Jennings and Daylen Everett combined to force and recover a fumble from Browns tight end Harold Fannin Jr.
Season Context for Watson and Sanders
Watson has guided the Browns to a 5-2 record to begin the campaign, placing them in a tie for first place in the AFC North. Previously, Watson led the team to a 27-24 victory against Pittsburgh during their Week 4 meeting.
Sanders, who entered the league as a second-round selection in the 2025 draft, earned Pro Bowl alternate honors during his rookie campaign that same year. His debut season featured a victory over the Steelers in Week 17.
