Tonga secured a thrilling 20-18 victory against Samoa in a raucous atmosphere at CommBank Stadium, confirming England’s exit from the Rugby League World Cup on points difference. Weeks of anticipation culminated in a vibrant celebration of national pride, with fans packing the venue for a high-stakes Pasifika derby.
An Exhilarating Clash Fueled by Cultural Pride
Pre-match festivities set a fever pitch for the crowd, with fans having paid high prices for tickets on the black market and resale sites. Brian To’o made electrifying early runs for Samoa, while props Jason Taumalolo and Addin Fonua-Blake provided powerful platforms for Tonga. After a video referee denied Tolutau Koula a try, Robert Toia broke the deadlock 27 minutes in with a brilliant side-stepping solo run down the right channel for Tonga.
Samoa responded when a booming kick from captain Jarome Luai was fumbled by Tonga, allowing Stephen Crichton to create an opening for To’o to score their first points. Toia opened the scoring after the break, and Isaiya Katoa extended Tonga’s lead to 14-4. Samoa answered immediately through a repeat sequence ending in To’o’s second try, though kicker Chanel Harris-Tavita injured his hamstring hitting the post on the conversion and exited the tournament.
Late Heroics Secure Semifinal Spot for Tonga
Samoa kept pushing, and slick handling on the left sent Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow over untouched. Replacement kicker Ronald Volkman missed the conversion but soon atoned by bouncing through tackles to finish a team move, putting Samoa ahead 18-14 with 10 minutes remaining.
Amid the deafening noise from the stands, Addin Fonua-Blake powered through tired tacklers to level the score, and Katoa’s conversion restored Tonga’s lead. Despite exhaustion, veteran forwards Tyson Frizell and captain Taumalolo delivered crucial defensive stops. Samoa’s hopes ended when Sua Fa’alogo stepped into touch, ruling out a try with two minutes remaining. Tonga advances to face the Kiwis in Newcastle in Saturday’s semifinal, while Samoa will play the Kangaroos in Sydney on Sunday.
