Chelsea piled further pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick with a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, as Lisandro Martinez was sent off during a difficult second half for the visitors. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring shortly after half-time before Cole Palmer converted a penalty following Martinez’s dismissal for a second bookable offence.
Missed opportunities in an entertaining first half
Chelsea started brightly as Estevao made his first Premier League start of the season. The Brazilian forward thought he had broken the deadlock in the 15th minute by converting a rebound after Senne Lammens saved Pedro Neto’s shot, but an offside flag ruled the effort out. Manchester United responded with several promising attacks and missed a golden opportunity when Bryan Mbeumo played Bruno Fernandes through on goal, only for the United captain to fire his left-footed shot over the crossbar with only Mike Penders to beat.
Amad Diallo also tested Penders from distance and later dispossessed Wesley Fofana to race into the penalty area, where the Chelsea goalkeeper denied him. United thought they had scored in the 34th minute when Matheus Cunha turned in Harry Maguire’s header from a Fernandes corner, but a VAR review revealed Cunha was narrowly offside. Chelsea almost punished the visitors moments later when Fofana headed Palmer’s corner back across goal, resulting in Moises Caicedo hitting the post via a deflection. Amad then wasted another clear chance by lifting his finish over the crossbar after capitalising on another mistake by Fofana, leaving the teams level at half-time.
Rogers breaks the deadlock and Martinez sees red
Chelsea took just five minutes after the restart to break the deadlock through a brilliant individual effort from Rogers. After United surrendered possession inside their own half, Romeo Lavia fed Rogers, who drove directly at the visiting defence, skipped past two challenges, and lifted the ball over the advancing Lammens to make it 1-0.
United’s hopes suffered a severe blow when Martinez collected two yellow cards within four minutes. The Argentine defender was first booked in the 59th minute for pulling back Rogers during a Chelsea attack, and moments later he challenged Fofana inside the penalty area as Palmer delivered a corner. Referee Peter Bankes reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor following a VAR intervention, awarded Chelsea a penalty, and showed Martinez a second yellow card.
Palmer seals victory from the spot
Palmer stepped up in the 64th minute and squeezed his penalty past Lammens, who guessed correctly and got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out of the bottom corner. The goal marked Palmer’s 50th Premier League strike for Chelsea, achieved in just 105 appearances.
Despite Carrick introducing substitutes Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven, the visitors struggled to create chances with their numerical disadvantage. Estevao had another goal disallowed by VAR for a narrow offside in the 72nd minute after firing into the roof of the net from Palmer’s pass, and the Brazilian later forced another fine save from Lammens. In stoppage time, Mbeumo came close with a stunning volley that Penders tipped onto the crossbar, while Palmer and substitute Valentin Barco missed late chances to extend Chelsea’s lead further.
The result leaves United winless in nine matches across all competitions, their worst sequence since the 1988-89 season. Chelsea will next face Sunderland in the Premier League, while Manchester United prepare to meet AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League.
