An all-time lineup composed entirely of New York Yankees players born in the month of October highlights several of the franchise’s most prominent figures across multiple eras, according to a compilation published by Pinstripe Alley on Yahoo Sports. The retrospective team brings together Hall of Fame legends, historic role players, and modern sluggers who share an October birth month.
Infield and Battery Selections
On the mound, Hall of Fame left-hander Whitey Ford, born October 21, was selected as the rotation ace. Ford, whose number is retired by the franchise, earned the starting role over other October-born Yankees pitchers, including Orlando Hernández and David Bednar, despite manager Casey Stengel’s unique handling of his workload during his career. Behind the plate, Joe Girardi, born October 14, was chosen as the starting catcher while also serving as the mythical squad’s player-manager.
The infield features Joe Pepitone (born October 9) at first base, taking the spot over Fred McGriff. Robinson Canó, born October 22, anchors second base on the strength of his offensive production in New York, edging out alternate candidates such as Snuffy Stirnweiss, Bobby Brown, and Tony Kubek. At shortstop, Frankie Crosetti (born October 4) brings unmatched championship experience, having collected 17 World Series titles across his tenure as a player and coach in the Bronx. Red Rolfe, born October 17, completes the infield at third base; Rolfe notably went on to coach the Toronto Huskies in the Basketball Association of America before the league merged into the NBA, in addition to managing in the major leagues.
Outfield and Designated Hitter
Mickey Mantle, born October 20, headlines the outfield in center. Mantle compiled 112.3 career fWAR during his storied tenure in New York despite being severely limited by injuries during the closing stages of his career. To accommodate Mantle, 1970s standout Mickey Rivers (born October 30) slides over to start in left field.
Dave Winfield, born October 3, takes the spot in right field after compiling a 135 OPS+ during his years with the Yankees, a tenure remembered as well for friction with late owner George Steinbrenner. Rounding out the lineup at designated hitter is Juan Soto, recognized for his impact during the 2024 season, which featured a pennant-clinching home run to push New York into the Fall Classic.
