The Women’s Tennis Association has accepted accountability after American player Jessica Pegula was recorded making critical remarks about rival Mirra Andreeva during a practice session at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells. Microphones picked up private comments made by Pegula to her coaching staff during a YouTube live stream of the court sessions.
Hot Mic Captures Critical Comments
During a practice session ahead of the tournament, Pegula was recorded speaking to her coach Mark Knowles about 19-year-old French Open champion Andreeva and her coach, Conchita Martinez. Pegula expressed frustration with the young player’s court demeanor and criticized Martinez’s handling of the situation.
“Conchita’s always been very nice to me, but I lost a little respect for her, because I’m just like, this girl, she’s a nice girl. She’s a diva. She needs to be humbled. Conchita eggs on her behaviour,” Pegula said on the broadcast, as reported by Sky Sports.
Pegula further remarked that she would not tolerate being spoken to disrespectfully if she were coaching. “If I were her coach and my player had just played four great games, she’s up 4-0, she gets mad at me and chases me down… I’d tell her not to talk to me like that,” she added, noting that “She’s bad… I feel like she needs to be provoked to get fired up and react.”
Comparing Andreeva to Coco Gauff, Pegula suggested that adopting Gauff’s mindset could elevate Andreeva’s game. “It’s so funny ‘cause if you see her and Coco’s mentality, if she had Coco’s mentality, she’s better than her. Serve and everything and moves just as good,” she remarked. Despite her criticisms, Pegula, a member of the WTA players’ council and runner-up at the 2024 US Open, also described the world No. 3 as “wonderful” and “smart.”
WTA Issues Apology and Removes Practice Audio
Following the incident, the WTA Tour removed all practice stream videos from its official YouTube platform and issued a statement clarifying what occurred. The governing body admitted it had failed to inform players and coaches that active microphones were broadcasting audio from the courts.
The organization stated that it takes “full responsibility for failing to inform our players and their teams that microphones, in place to give fans a livestream of the players’ practice, were active on the courts. We sincerely apologise for failing to meet our responsibility to ensure players and coaches were properly informed.”
WTA officials explained that the audio equipment was installed strictly to capture background sounds rather than private technical discussions between players and coaches. “The microphones were intended to capture the ambient sounds of tennis, not player or coach conversations. However, conversations were captured, and we recognise that we failed to ensure the appropriate safeguards were in place,” the organization said, adding, “We are continuing with live streaming of practice but there will not be any audio.”
The season-ending tournament runs from November 8 to 15 in Indian Wells, California, before relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2027. Pegula has been drawn in a group alongside Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Linda Noskova, while Andreeva will avoid playing Pegula in the group stage after being drawn with Aryna Sabalenka, Elina Svitolina, and Karolina Muchova.
