As part of the 2026 edition of Ranking the Rockies, we examine every player who logged playing time for the team, ordered by Baseball Reference WAR (rWAR) from lowest to highest. Right-handed pitcher Victor Vodnik recorded a 0.1 rWAR during his time with the franchise.
Vodnik’s Arrival and Career in Colorado
Victor Vodnik first arrived in Denver via a 2023 trade deadline deal that sent pitcher Pierce Johnston to the Atlanta Braves. At the time of the trade, Vodnik was ranked as Atlanta’s No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Originally drafted by the Braves in the 14th round of the 2018 draft out of Rialto High School in California, he built a solid minor league resume featuring a 3.48 ERA across five seasons.
During his three years with the Rockies, Vodnik saw extensive action out of the bullpen. After pitching 8.2 innings in 2023, he logged 73.2 innings with a 4.28 ERA in 2024, 50.2 innings with a 3.02 ERA in 2025, and 36 innings with a 5.25 ERA in 2026 before being traded to the Miami Marlins. His 2026 campaign was interrupted by more than a month on the Injured List due to right ulnar nerve inflammation, returning to the active roster on June 15.
As Cory Cohen observed, the hard-throwing right-hander showed flashes of closer-like stuff but struggled with consistency throughout his four partial seasons in Colorado. According to Baseball Savant, Vodnik utilized a six-pitch mix, relying heaviest on his four-seam fastball at 45.6 percent, his slider at 27.7 percent, and his changeup at 14.8 percent. In 2026, he increased his slider usage—a pitch that generated a 33.6 percent Whiff%—at the expense of his changeup, while also finishing the season with a 56.5 percent ground ball percentage.
Stuff, Struggles, and Trade to Miami
No one doubted Vodnik’s raw stuff, as his four-seamer regularly touched 98.5 mph. However, his control remained erratic, producing a career-worst 6.50 strikeouts per nine innings that failed to outweigh his 4.75 walks per nine innings. The Colorado player development staff and altitude environment ultimately could not fix the ongoing command issues, leading the team to deal him to Miami.
Vodnik did display significant improvement as the 2026 season progressed. After posting a 7.82 ERA in March and April that climbed to 8.44 in May, he rebounded with a 2.84 ERA in June and a 2.53 ERA in July. His home-road splits highlighted the challenges of pitching at Coors Field, as his road ERA sat at 3.82 compared to 6.31 in Denver. Following his arrival with the Marlins, Vodnik pitched 22.2 innings and posted a 4.37 ERA.
The Rockies likely traded Vodnik for two main reasons: his trade value remained high enough to make an August deal sensible, and his persistent inconsistency did not align with a front office prioritizing the reduction of walks. The trade was announced just as the trade deadline clock expired, immediately clearing his locker at Coors Field following a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, concluding his tenure with the franchise.
