Uros Medic Urges Islam Makhachev to Retire From UFC

UFC welterweight Uros Medic has shared a surprising suggestion for dominant champion Islam Makhachev, advising him to retire and explore a new career outside of fighting.

Medic Suggests Retirement After Years of Dominance

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev have dominated the UFC over the past decade, with Makhachev setting records including four lightweight title defenses, a 17-fight lightweight winning streak, and securing a second title at 170 pounds. During a recent appearance on the Believe You Me podcast, as reported by sports.yahoo.com, Serbian welterweight Uros Medic admitted he is growing weary of watching Makhachev’s continued success.

Medic stated on the podcast, “I’m going to be honest with you: I’m a little tired of watching Islam Makhachev winning at the top. I’m like, ‘Come on, go rest, go relax. You’re the best, bro.'”

Believing Makhachev has accomplished everything possible in mixed martial arts, Medic added, “You’ve proved everything.’ I’m not afraid to say he is the best in the division right now. He is the champion. There’s no doubt about it. But if you’re talking or considering retirement, bro, get out. You’ve already accomplished everything.”

Makhachev’s Future Plans and Upcoming Fights

Makhachev has previously hinted that his next few appearances could mark the end of his UFC career, which explains his desire to face top-tier competition. The Russian fighter is anticipated to face the winner of the bout between Carlos Prates and Michael Morales for the interim 170-pound title at UFC 336.

Earlier talks for Makhachev to defend his undisputed championship in January stalled when he stepped back from negotiations to wait for a more appropriate opponent. That choice drew criticism from supporters and UFC head Dana White, though the champion appeared unfazed by the reaction.

Medic emphasized that Makhachev has earned the freedom to step away and enjoy his achievements, praising both Makhachev and Nurmagomedov for their lasting legacy in the sport. He noted, “Go do your thing, bro. Be a businessman, be a politician, he can be anything. He is a smart fellow. So we’re probably going to see him for another year, maybe? Another one or two fights, and that’s amazing.”

Concluding his thoughts on the champion, Medic said, “He has made a statement in this division that will probably be a long time before someone comes around and does what him and Khabib have done. So, very impressive, but life moves on, divisions move on, and I’m interested to see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Medic carries a four-fight win streak into his upcoming bout against Kevin Holland at UFC 334 later this month, while Makhachev’s next Octagon appearance is expected around the middle of 2027.
