UFC women’s bantamweight contender Joselyne Edwards expressed her excitement about serving as the official backup fighter for the upcoming UFC 334 co-main event.
Joselyne Edwards Comments on UFC 334 Backup Fighter Status
The UFC 334 co-headliner features women’s bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison defending her title against Amanda Nunes. To ensure the bout goes ahead as planned, the promotion selected Edwards to step in if either Harrison or Nunes is forced to withdraw.
Speaking to MMAjunkie.com, Edwards explained why she believes she earned the opportunity based on her recent performances. “Who else? No other girl has done what I’ve done with my winning streak. I’m winning, and winning decisively – knockouts, finishes. I said, ‘If not me, who else? I don’t see any other option. … I don’t wish anyone bad. If the fight doesn’t happen, ok, but the winner has to fight me. I don’t wish for any of them to get injured, but if they can’t fight, I’ll be there, ready. Whoever wishes bad on someone, that comes back to you,” Edwards stated.
Joselyne Edwards Likely Gets Next Title Shot
Her role as the backup fighter highlights the promotion’s confidence in the Panama native, who enters the position on a five-fight winning streak inside the Octagon that includes four stoppage victories. UFC matchmakers favor fighters who secure finishes, making Edwards a standout competitor in a women’s division historically known for lower finishing rates.
Following this assignment, Edwards is positioned to receive the next title opportunity against the winner of Harrison and Nunes. Alternatively, she could contend for a vacant title if Harrison follows through on suggestions that she might retire and vacate the belt due to accumulated injuries.
Edwards remains prepared to make weight and step into the Octagon at UFC 334 should any last-minute changes occur.
