Two Grand Forks Red River Alums Enter Kalamazoo Hall of Fame

Two former Grand Forks Red River tennis players were inducted into the Kalamazoo College Athletics Hall of Fame on October 22, recognizing their standout collegiate athletic careers.

College Achievements

Kennelly, who graduated from Red River in 1993, achieved three-time doubles All-American status and earned three All-MIAA second-team selections while competing for the NCAA Division III program. He secured conference doubles titles in both 1996 and 1997, leading the Hornets as team captain through both campaigns.

Seelan, a 2002 Red River graduate, collected four All-America accolades during his time at Kalamazoo, consisting of three in doubles and one in singles competition. He captured the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region doubles crown and received the designation of the region’s Senior Player of the Year.

In addition to being a three-time All-MIAA honoree, conference most valuable player, and three-time doubles champion, Seelan earned the MIAA Stowe Memorial Award. He advanced to the NCAA Division III doubles semifinals in 2004 followed by a national championship match appearance in 2005, and captained the squad in his senior year.

High School Background

During their high school years at Red River, both athletes contributed significantly to the program’s success. Kennelly helped the Roughriders capture North Dakota state team titles in 1991 and 1992, secured an East Region singles championship in the fall of 1992, and placed fourth in the state singles tournament.

Seelan played a key role during a dominant era for the Riders, who claimed state team championships every year from 1998 to 2014. During his senior season in the fall of 2001, Seelan captured the East Region singles title and finished third in the state singles competition.
