A 14-year-old boy has surrendered to West Midlands Police following a social media video that appeared to show a fan mocking Sunderland with a photograph of Bradley Lowery at a match.
Police Investigation and Club Response
Bradley Lowery was a Sunderland supporter who passed away at the age of six in 2017 due to neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer.
Coventry stated on Sunday that they were investigating the footage, while West Midlands Police confirmed that an active investigation is underway. Police officials noted they are aware of the video circulating online from Coventry’s match against Sunderland. Officers stated that a comprehensive investigation has begun and that the 14-year-old boy turned himself in to be interviewed soon. Authorities added that they recognize the upset and outrage caused in the community and to the victim’s family, and confirmed they are keeping the family updated while working closely with both football clubs.
Coventry announced they were aware of the video and emphasized that the club rejects offensive behavior and will cooperate fully with the relevant authorities.
Family Statement on the Incident
Bradley’s mother, Gemma Lowery, issued a statement through the Bradley Lowery Foundation, an organization that raises funds and awareness to support children with cancer. She stated that her son deserves to be remembered with love rather than hate. Gemma Lowery described the footage as heartbreaking, noting that the image is one of her favorite photographs of her son. She recalled that day vividly, remembering how happy and joyful he was during moments that were precious because they were rare. She pointed out that much of Bradley’s brief life involved fighting cancer and undergoing harsh treatments, adding that seeing such a memory used cruelly hurts her heart.
Gemma Lowery stated she is a football-loving supporter who follows Sunderland to home and away games, adding that she supports football banter but believes mocking a child who died from cancer crosses the line. She stated she hopes the club takes proper action and that the boy’s family helps him realize how painful his actions were. She also stated that she does not want any hatred directed at the fan, while reiterating her hope for appropriate club action.
