Scott Parker has been appointed as the new head coach of West Ham United on a two-and-a-half-year contract, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo following his departure.
The 46-year-old manager takes over with immediate effect and is scheduled to be in the dugout for the team’s fixture against Cardiff City. His arrival comes after West Ham slipped to eighth place in the Championship standings following consecutive home defeats against promotion rivals Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.
Emotional Return to London Stadium
The appointment marks a return to West Ham for Parker, who made 129 appearances for the club during his playing career. Throughout his four-year stint as a player, he earned the Hammer of the Year award three times and was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year in the 2010/11 season.
In an interview with the club’s official website, Parker shared his connection to the club and its fanbase. “It is a very proud moment for me to step into this role and return to a club that means so much to me and my family,” Parker said. He noted that he felt an immediate rapport and respect from the supporters during his playing days, describing it as a feeling he had not experienced anywhere else.
Aiming for Championship Promotion
Parker brings a proven track record in the second division, having previously achieved promotion to the Premier League with Fulham, Bournemouth, and Burnley. He expressed his determination to guide West Ham back into the top flight by establishing team consistency.
“I’ve been in this division three times and I’ve got out of this division three times,” Parker stated, emphasizing that he plans to use all his experience and knowledge to help the squad meet the physical and mental demands of the league.
West Ham interim chief executive officer Karim Virani stated that Parker was the unanimous choice of the board. Virani highlighted Parker’s extensive playing and managerial background, his understanding of the club’s identity, and his success in the EFL Championship as key reasons for his appointment. Parker steps into the managerial role ahead of Wednesday night’s match in Cardiff.
