Pyotr Kochetkov secured a 26-save shutout to earn his 10th consecutive victory to begin the season, while Sean Walker netted two goals as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Winnipeg Jets 7-0 on Sunday in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Record-Setting Performance
Kochetkov earned his second shutout of the season, lifting his career total to 13 shutouts in 135 games. With the victory, he became the third goaltender in NHL history to begin a season with 10 straight wins.
The milestone ties Kochetkov with Carey Price, who opened the 2014-15 season with 10 wins for the Montreal Canadiens. The league record for the longest season-opening winning streak belongs to Jack Campbell, who won 11 consecutive games for the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2020-21 campaign.
Scoring Breakdown
Sean Walker opened the scoring 5:16 into the contest with a short-handed goal, marking his first two-goal performance in two seasons with the Hurricanes. Sebastian Aho, Juuso Valimaki, Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored as Carolina extended its winning streak to four games.
Aho added a power-play goal during a dominant four-goal surge by Carolina in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Stankoven’s goal at 9:09 of the middle frame extended the advantage to 5-0, at which point Winnipeg had only mustered five total shots on goal.
Seth Jarvis, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Shayne Gostisbehere each contributed two assists for the Hurricanes. Winnipeg starting goaltender Stuart Skinner stopped 12 shots before being pulled after surrendering the fifth goal, while relief netminder Clay Stevenson turned away 13 shots.
Jets Struggle on the Road
The defeat extends Winnipeg’s losing streak to nine games, dropping their record to 0-7-2 during the skid. The Jets have struggled defensively, allowing a total of 23 goals over their last four contests.
The Jets will wrap up a four-game road trip on Tuesday night against the Montreal Canadiens, while the Hurricanes will travel to play the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night.
