Packers’ Watson Returns From Hospital to Finish Panthers Game

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson briefly left Thursday Night Football against the Carolina Panthers in an ambulance for emergency tests before returning to finish the Week 8 contest. Medical staff cleared Watson after hospital evaluation ruled out serious damage following a first-half chest injury.

Hospital Transport and Quick Return

Watson sustained the injury during a 53-yard reception in the first half, which set up Green Bay’s second touchdown. On the play, he collided with Carolina cornerback Will Lee III, who was subsequently listed as doubtful to return due to a hamstring injury. Watson spit up blood after the hit, triggering team medical staff to send him to a facility near Lambeau Field for precautionary examination.

While awaiting testing, Watson kept track of the contest from his hospital room by following the live play-by-play feed. Once doctors confirmed there was no internal bleeding, he was cleared to rejoin the team. Prime Video’s Kaylee Hartung reported that Watson arrived back at the stadium via ambulance, ran into the locker room, fitted extra rib padding, and pointed toward the right side of his chest while updating teammates.

Speaking to Hartung after the game, Watson detailed his desire to stay on the field despite the medical precaution.

“It was tough,” Watson said to Hartung during the postgame show. “I never wanted to go. I was hoping they would let me off. I said I was feeling better once I kind of caught my breath. They said there was a couple of signs that made them have to take me over there. It is what it is. I was just praying that it was good enough to where I could come back out here. Thankfully it was, and I was able to get back out. I’m trying to be on the football field. That’s first and foremost for me.”

On-Field Production and Medical History

Watson delivered a strong early performance prior to his temporary exit, leading all receivers in the first half with six catches for 100 yards and helping quarterback Jordan Love start the game completing 17 of 20 pass attempts. In his absence, receiver Matthew Golden caught a touchdown pass after dropping a potential scoring grab on the prior play, while tight end Tucker Kraft recorded Green Bay’s initial touchdown of the night.

Upon re-entering the game in the third quarter, Watson targeted a pass on his first snap back before later making two fourth-quarter catches. The second reception converted a crucial third down, enabling Green Bay to run down the clock during their final drives.

Health issues have frequently disrupted Watson’s professional career. Across five seasons in the NFL, he has missed 20 games and has yet to complete a full campaign, previously dealing with a chest injury, three hamstring strains, an ankle sprain, knee bruises, an ACL tear, and a concussion during his 2022 rookie year.
