Team-Mate Defends Owono Amid Criticism
In the wake of the tragedy, Owono has faced widespread criticism regarding the reckless nature of the challenge. However, Spatz stepped forward to defend the 25-year-old, revealing that the Equatorial Guinea international has been deeply impacted by the event.
Speaking via social media, Spatz expressed profound devastation and extended condolences to the family and friends of De Miguel, as well as the entire Tenerife community and wider football world. The Argentine defender emphasized that the FC Andorra squad remains in shock over the unimaginable tragedy.
Commenting on his teammate, Spatz stated on Instagram, as quoted by 101 Great Goals: “I also want to say a few words about my team-mate, goalkeeper, and friend, who has been profoundly affected by what happened. Those of us who know him understand the kind of person he is, how much he is suffering right now, and that he would never intentionally harm anyone.”
Spatz added that while unpredictable incidents can occur in football, no one could foresee such a tragic outcome, noting that football is secondary as everyone stands together in grief.
Meanwhile, Spanish police have initiated an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter regarding Owono’s involvement in the incident.
