Nationals Target Pitcher Kris Bubic in Free Agency

Left-handed pitcher Kris Bubic has emerged as an intriguing free-agent target for the Washington Nationals as the club seeks pitching additions this offseason. The 29-year-old offers versatility as either a starting candidate or a multi-inning reliever, though his career has been disrupted by recurring health issues, sports.yahoo.com reported.

Strong On-Field Performance and Pitch Metrics

When healthy, Bubic has delivered effective performance on the mound. His best season came in 2025 with the Kansas City Royals, when he earned his first All-Star selection after posting a 2.55 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 116⅓ innings over 20 starts. His breakout year ended prematurely in July because of a rotator cuff strain in his shoulder.

During the 2026 season, while splitting time between Kansas City and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bubic posted a 3.76 ERA, a 3.54 FIP, and a 3.99 xFIP across 55 innings, according to FanGraphs figures. He registered a 9.16 strikeout-per-nine-innings rate and a 46.8% ground-ball rate, alongside a 4.25 walk-per-nine-innings rate. Pitch-tracking data from Baseball Savant showed that hitters managed just a .119 batting average and a .119 slugging percentage against his changeup, which produced a 32.1% whiff rate. His slider and sweeper also induced missed swings at rates of 33.3% and 29%, respectively.

Durability Questions and Bullpen Flexibility

Injuries remain the main concern regarding Bubic’s durability. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023, experienced the shoulder issue in 2025, and spent most of 2026 sidelined by elbow trouble. If the Nationals pursue him as a starter, the team would need adequate rotation depth to monitor his innings and cover for potential downtime.

Bubic also provides proven utility in relief if a full-time rotation role is unavailable. In 2024, he recorded a 2.67 ERA with 39 strikeouts over 30⅓ relief innings, and he finished the 2026 regular season by delivering 4⅔ scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Los Angeles.

ESPN analyst Kiley McDaniel projects Bubic to command a two-year contract worth $18 million in free agency. That potential investment represents a calculated risk for Washington, offering high upside in the starting rotation or solid production as a long reliever.
