The Miami Hurricanes traveled to South Bend to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and suffered a 31-24 defeat, marking their first loss of the season and making their path to the playoffs more challenging. Craig T. Smith provided the recap of the game, while Mike Schiffman outlined the top three stars.
The Good Performance Highlights
Quarterback Darian Mensah completed 24 of 43 pass attempts for 276 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, while adding 28 rushing yards on 11 carries. His cumulative season statistics now stand at 211 completions on 276 attempts for 2,701 yards, 28 touchdowns, and two interceptions, alongside 35 carries for 137 yards and two scores.
Wide receiver Cooper Barkate led the receiving corps with 10 catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while tight end Elija Lofton recorded seven receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. contributed 13 carries for 57 yards and one catch for 4 yards.
Defensively, linebacker Mo Toure registered 12 tackles, including crucial run stops on third downs, while linebacker Chase Smith added eight tackles and a quarterback hurry. Linebacker Kamal Bonner tallied six tackles in his first extended action since transferring last year. On special teams, punter Dylan Joyce averaged 43.8 yards across five kicks, and kicker Jake Weinberg converted his sole field goal attempt while producing touchbacks on all kickoffs.
The Bad and The Ugly
The game featured several struggles, including moving away from the running game early and an inability of the pass rush to pressure the quarterback consistently. Mensah missed a few throws during the matchup, and the team committed two fumbles, with one lost. The final play concluded with a fumble by Barkate on a lateral attempt that Notre Dame recovered.
Miami totaled 377 yards of offense, allowed 412 total yards, and lost the turnover battle 2-0. The defense surrendered 319 passing yards and 93 rushing yards, while the unit was flagged for five penalties resulting in 31 yards. Several penalties hindered momentum, including offsides calls and a holding penalty on special teams that resulted in poor field position.
Team Grades and Assessment
The offense received a C- grade, marked by a conservative first-half game plan and an offensive line that struggled with pressure before finding rhythm in the second half. The defense also earned a C- grade for showing improved physicality and forcing multiple three-and-outs in the second half, despite early struggles and missed tackles.
Special teams received a D grade due to a costly 56-yard punt return allowed and a special teams penalty, despite solid punting and kicking performances. The coaching staff also received a D grade as the team appeared unprepared for the raucous environment early in the contest, falling into a 24-3 hole before mounting a comeback attempt.
The Hurricanes will use the setback to regroup as they return to the practice field to prepare for their upcoming schedule.
