The first edition of the College Football Playoff Rankings was released with undefeated Miami (FL) opening at No. 1 ahead of Georgia. Just over a month remains until the final bracket is selected, leaving the Hurricanes needing to hold off the Bulldogs and the rest of the top 25 to retain the top seed for the postseason.

Top Seeds and SEC Dominance

Miami stands at 8-0 with one ranked win over Wake Forest and a remaining game against Notre Dame on Nov. 7. No. 2 Georgia has two wins against ranked opponents with three more ahead. Utah, reigning champion Indiana, and Alabama round out the top five, as reported by CBS Sports Headlines, with SEC teams holding 10 of the top 25 positions.

Nine of the 12 teams previously ranked No. 1 in initial CFP rankings ultimately reached the playoff. The expanded 12-team field makes this path easier, with Boise State taking the final projected spot as the 25th-ranked conference champion.

Committee Decisions and Team Positions

CFP chair Hunter Yurachek addressed Notre Dame’s No. 11 ranking, noting the team’s strong performance on both sides of the ball despite lacking a signature win, having lost to BYU with their next best win against Wisconsin. Yurachek also explained that fifth-ranked Alabama and No. 13 Tennessee were never placed in the same evaluation pod, keeping head-to-head results from factoring in yet while highlighting the Crimson Tide’s wins over Kentucky, South Carolina, and Mississippi State.

The committee’s initial rankings highlight the strength of the SEC, with five teams in the top 10. Historical data from the expanded playoff era shows no team starting outside the initial top 18 has reached the final bracket.

Big 12 Contenders and Two-Loss Teams

The Big 12 features Utah at No. 3, BYU at No. 9, and Texas Tech at No. 15. BYU and Texas Tech each hold two ranked wins, setting up potential scenarios for the league to send multiple teams to the playoff.

Among two-loss squads, fifth-ranked Alabama holds a surprising and advantageous position ahead of teams like Texas, BYU, Kentucky, and LSU. Upcoming weekend matchups, including Texas at Missouri, Kentucky at Tennessee, Georgia at Ole Miss, and Alabama at LSU, promise to shake up the standings further.

Bubble Teams and Remaining Challenges

Notre Dame faces a crucial test against Miami, carrying a playoff assurance clause if they finish in the top 12, though a loss would heavily pressure their resume. Meanwhile, 12th-ranked Ohio State looks to recover from a loss at USC as they prepare to face Oregon.

Teams positioned between Nos. 19 and 25 face a historical hurdle, as no team starting in that range in the initial rankings has ever reached the playoff as an at-large selection. Squads like USC, Oregon, Florida, and South Carolina look to defy this trend by winning out through the remainder of the season, as reported by CBS Sports Headlines.
