Lionel Messi Secures Inter Miami Champions Cup Spot

Lionel Messi delivered a decisive performance as Inter Miami secured a spot in next season’s Champions Cup with a 2-1 comeback victory against the New England Revolution. The result also places Miami in prime position to claim the second seed in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference.

Clinching Continental Qualification

Miami traveled to face the New England Revolution, who occupied second place in the East. With both continental qualification and conference positioning at stake, a goal and an assist from the Argentine forward shifted control to Miami. Continental qualification is now guaranteed, and a victory against Charlotte FC in the final fixture next weekend will secure second place behind Nashville.

Other results ensured that the Revolution also qualified for the Champions Cup, though the evening brought mixed emotions for the home side. New England started strongly and opened the scoring early in the second half through Daniel Gazdag.

Messi Takes Center Stage

Trailing and with their season hanging in the balance, Messi ignited the comeback. He provided the pass for Daniel Berterame to equalize in the 69th minute. With seven minutes remaining in regulation, Messi fought through two challenges on the edge of the penalty box and struck a low left-footed shot past goalkeeper Matt Turner to net the winner.

Miami coach Kily González expressed satisfaction after the match, stating, “It makes me very happy for the players and for the club, we are on the side of contributing things.” González added that the team faced a tough opponent that pressed high, noting that they struggled with passive ball possession at times but executed tactical changes to find depth and space.

The goal marked Messi’s 26th in the league this season, alongside 16 assists. Highlighting his captain’s impact, González stated, “I have no doubt that he’s the best of all. None of them can compare to him when it comes to respect for his colleagues. Leo at his age and what he does, from my point of view, deserves the MVP and also the Ballon d’Or. I hope he can achieve it.”
