Great Britain’s Jody Cundy saw his two-decade reign as the C4 kilo time trial world champion come to an end after finishing second at the para cycling track world championships in the Netherlands. Australian rider Korey Boddington claimed gold after surpassing the veteran British cyclist on the event’s final run.
Boddington Takes Gold as Cundy Earns Silver
The 48-year-old Cundy initially won the C4 kilo world title in 2006 and successfully retained his rainbow jersey across 15 world championships over the following two decades. Aiming for his 17th title in the event, Cundy finished the kilometer in one minute and 4.93 seconds. However, Boddington edged him out for the top spot, completing the run 2.25 seconds faster.
Ahead of the competition, Cundy reflected on his long career, stating that “age was catching up with him” and noting that it would be “hard” to add to his 23 track cycling world titles. In total, Cundy is a nine-time Paralympic champion, having also earned three gold medals in para swimming between 1996 and 2000.
Additional Medals for Team Great Britain
Great Britain recorded several other podium finishes on the opening day of the championships. Rebecca Newark secured gold for the British team in the women’s C5 kilo time trial.
In the women’s B kilo time trial, British pair Sophie Unwin and pilot Jenny Holl won silver, while teammates Elizabeth Jordan and pilot Anna Whitworth Hay earned bronze. Additionally, Morgan Fice-Noyes and Christopher Latham finished second to earn silver in the men’s 4km pursuit, and Finlay Graham claimed bronze in the men’s C3 sprint final.
