FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has broken his silence following the tragic death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, expressing deep sorrow over the fatal incident. The tragedy occurred after an on-field collision during Monday’s Segunda Division match between the two Spanish clubs.
Fatal Match Collision and Legal Investigation
The incident took place at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez as both players rushed to contest a loose ball, resulting in Owono’s knee striking De Miguel in the chest. Owono, a 25-year-old Equatorial Guinea international, was shown a red card for the challenge but remained on the pitch as medical personnel and players from both teams rushed to treat the forward.
De Miguel, aged 30, was transported to the hospital following the incident but passed away on Tuesday morning. Amid severe public scrutiny surrounding the challenge, Owono has become the subject of a police investigation regarding possible involuntary manslaughter.
Goalkeeper Expresses Condolences
Prior to Owono’s public statement, his FC Andorra teammate Lautaro Spatz spoke out to defend him earlier on Wednesday. The goalkeeper subsequently released an official statement through his club to convey his grief and offer condolences.
“These are the most difficult days of my life,” Owono stated.
“I find it difficult to find the words and I find it very difficult to assimilate anything that has happened. I feel enormous pain for the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family and all the people who loved him.”
Addressing the authorities’ involvement, Owono affirmed that he will cooperate fully with any official inquiry while maintaining his focus on De Miguel’s memory.
“I know that there will be many issues to address, I will face whatever comes with all due respect. But right now, honestly, I can’t think of anything other than Jesus and the pain we are experiencing,” Owono said, adding, “Rest in peace, Jesus.”
