Flyers Suffer Epic Choke Against Rangers in 3-2 Defeat

The Philadelphia Flyers continued their difficult start to the 2026-27 NHL season with a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday night. Nearly a quarter of the way through the campaign, the Flyers have managed just four wins in their first 18 games.

A Missed Opportunity

Statistically, the game was evenly matched between the Metropolitan Division rivals. The Rangers held a slim 28-25 advantage in shots on goal, while 5-on-5 shot attempts finished dead even at 48-48 according to Natural Stat Trick. The Flyers even edged the expected goals battle 2.67 to 2.65.

Goals from Simon Benoit—his first since March 2025—and Noel Acciari gave Philadelphia a 2.65 advantage and a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. The Rangers pressed hard in the final frame, out-shooting the Flyers 10-8 and out-attempting them 17-11 at 5-on-5.

Late-Game Collapse

Midway through the third period, Denver Barkey was whistled for a slashing penalty, allowing Pavel Dorofeyev to tie the game for the Rangers on the power play. The Flyers subsequently shifted to a conservative style of play, which ultimately backfired when a routine offensive zone dump-and-chase led to a sudden transition.

Rangers forward Ty Kartye found open ice on a breakaway and scored the go-ahead goal to put the Blueshirts up 3-2. Defensive breakdowns in the neutral zone and a lack of coverage on the middle and right side of the ice left the Flyers exposed on the play.

Following the game, Travis Sanheim admitted he was unsure how the coverage breakdown occurred, noting he was up on his check in the neutral zone. Acciari suggested the team shifted focus to defending a lead rather than maintaining the aggressive style that brought them success earlier in the match.

Head coach Rick Tocchet expressed frustration over the team’s inability to handle late-game pressure. Meanwhile, several younger players saw limited ice time during the final stretch of the game, with Matvei Michkov, Porter Martone, and Cole Knuble all heavily restricted in the last 10 minutes.

The defeat drops the Flyers to 0-4-3 against divisional opponents this season as they struggle to find consistency.
