All WTA Finals tennis players were scheduled to hold their press conferences on Friday at Indian Wells, and all sessions proceeded smoothly except for Elena Rybakina’s.
Health Concerns and Tournament Status
The reigning WTA World No. 1, who will finish the season holding that ranking, had her press conference delayed until Saturday due to illness. Rybakina has struggled with her health since capturing the World No. 1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open.
A combination of allergies, lingering issues from a foot injury, and a neck injury sustained at the previous week’s Japan Open have caused problems for Rybakina. Fans have expressed concern that she may be unable to compete at the WTA Finals, where the defending champion is scheduled to face Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova on Sunday.
Alternate Player Ready and Recent Appearances
In the event that Rybakina is unable to take the court, Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk is positioned to step into her spot in the tournament. Kostyuk has dealt with her own injuries throughout the year while managing to achieve career-best results.
Meanwhile, WTA Finals promotional photos taken on Wednesday were released on Friday, featuring individual portraits rather than the traditional group photo. Rybakina also appeared in behind-the-scenes video footage alongside Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka.
