Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has praised captain Bruno Fernandes, stating that the midfielder’s dedication to the team remains unquestioned and that he is playing as well as ever. The support comes after Fernandes helped spark a dramatic second-half comeback against Roma in the Europa League following recent squad tension.
Recent Friction and Penalty Comeback
Fernandes was named on the bench for October’s home loss to Bournemouth after voicing criticism of Carrick and the coaching staff following a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como. The 32-year-old Portugal international returned to the starting lineup for the Premier League match against Chelsea a week later, before scoring a retaken penalty during Tuesday’s victory over Roma.
Speaking after the mid-week win, Fernandes dismissed rumors surrounding his relationship with the manager, stating there had been a lot of false reports circulating. He also denied that any formal clear-the-air meetings had taken place, despite club sources previously confirming that conversations had occurred between the two.
“I think his actions, the way he’s played and how he dealt with even retaking the penalty and frame of mind he was in for that, tells [you] everything,” Carrick said, as reported by BBC Sport. “Bruno’s as good as ever.”
Private Talks and Managerial Pressure
Carrick chose not to share specific details of his discussions with Fernandes following the loss to Bournemouth, describing regular dialogue as a normal part of daily operations at Carrington.
“There are always conversations, and bits going on,” Carrick explained. “It’s acknowledging when things are going well and what we need to improve on.”
He added that individual and group talks remain private, noting that the team has moved in a positive direction. “Bruno’s commitment is undoubted for me in terms of what he brings to this team and this club,” he stated.
Club executives are expected to evaluate the managerial situation following Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. With only one win in their past nine matches—a victory over Ipswich in August—Carrick acknowledged the urgent need to establish consistency.
Writing in the matchday programme, Carrick noted that while the squad could be pleased with aspects of the mid-week display, there is much more progress required. He urged his players to build on the momentum ahead of the upcoming international fixture window.
The urgency for a positive result heightened following Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 victory over Manchester City. That result leaves Manchester United at risk of spending the international break in the Premier League relegation zone if they fail to defeat Aston Villa on Sunday.
