The Atlanta Braves are expected to strengthen their pitching rotation ahead of next season following the conclusion of their previous campaign. Reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution indicate the team monitored specific starting pitching options leading up to the August trade deadline.
Interest in Casey Mize and Nick Pivetta
According to Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as reported by sports.yahoo.com, the Braves were prominently linked to current free agent right-hander Casey Mize. The team also held reported interest in fellow free agent right-hander Nick Pivetta. However, Burns noted that Atlanta’s interest in Mize might have been overstated, while the organization harbored injury concerns regarding Pivetta.
Mize spent multiple seasons as a core member of the Detroit Tigers’ rotation and posted strong numbers during 2026, recording a 2.70 ERA and a 2.58 FIP across 16 starts and 86.2 innings. Following a trade to the San Diego Padres, Mize struggled through a difficult rental stint, posting a 7.42 ERA and a 7.17 FIP over 10 starts and 44.2 innings. Mize also spent time on the injured list during the 2026 season.
Pivetta faced similar availability hurdles in 2026, limited to eight starts for the Padres due to a right flexor strain that sidelined him from late April until September. When on the mound, Pivetta performed effectively with a 2.86 ERA and a 2.21 FIP, mirroring his production from 2025.
Free Agency Outlook and Front Office Strategy
Despite the rough finish in San Diego, Mize’s earlier performance in Detroit is expected to draw substantial interest on the open market. His recent struggles could potentially align with the short-term contract preferences favored by Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos.
Similarly, Pivetta’s performance has drawn reported interest from the Padres regarding a potential return, and his profile could likewise fit Atlanta’s typical free agency approach. Current reports remain speculative, with no substantive indications that the Braves are close to finalizing a deal with any free agent.
Negotiations and discussions across the league continue as teams evaluate options prior to upcoming roster deadlines.
