Xabi Alonso expressed great sympathy for Michael Carrick but stated that Manchester United’s difficult situation will not change Chelsea’s strategy for their upcoming Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Pressure Mounting at Old Trafford
Carrick faces intense scrutiny following a poor start to his first full season in charge of United, coming after a successful spell as interim manager. The Red Devils have accumulated only seven points from their first eight league matches, sitting in 16th place and narrowly above the relegation zone. In addition, they have been eliminated from the EFL Cup and have lost two of their opening three Champions League fixtures.
Despite reports that club officials have already discussed potential replacements, Carrick remains in his position. Old Trafford supporters voiced their backing for the manager following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, while directing boos at the players as they left the pitch. Midfielder Bruno Fernandes was benched for that match after questioning Carrick’s tactical decisions following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. Fernandes and Carrick have since held clear-the-air discussions to help the team move forward.
Chelsea Preparing for a Tough Test
Chelsea occupy fifth place in the standings with 13 points under Alonso, though the team is also seeking to return to winning ways following a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham and an EFL Cup penalty shootout exit against Liverpool. Alonso explained that the off-field drama surrounding their opponents does not affect his preparation.
“I have great respect, I have great sympathy for Michael as a manager,” Alonso said during a pre-press conference, as reported by 101 Great Goals. “I know him because we have played against each other. We played recently in a legends game and we had a little chat. He is a good guy and one you want to be around. Aside from that, it is not for me to comment.”
When asked if United’s ongoing issues alter Chelsea’s mindset, Alonso added: “For me, it doesn’t change. We need to prepare the same way. We can only control what we can control. We know they are a good team, it doesn’t matter about the table. They have a good squad, good player, good manager.”
Alonso emphasized the importance of returning to winning ways in the league and building on the team’s performance against Liverpool. The Chelsea manager noted that the squad immediately shifted focus to United after the trip to Merseyside and observed improvements in their midweek display despite the disappointing results.
