Major League Soccer has released the schedule for its 2027 sprint season, serving as a critical bridge toward transitioning the league to a European calendar. The condensed campaign will feature 14 regular-season matches for each team, running from February 19 until Decision Day on May 8.

Opening Matches and Stadium Milestones

The 2027 season kicks off on February 19 with a match between Inter Miami and FC Cincinnati. The regular season will conclude on May 8 with a Hudson River Derby matchup between New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls. As New York City FC prepares to open a new stadium in Queens, this fixture is expected to be the final MLS match played at Yankee Stadium, which the club has used as its home venue since entering the league in 2015.

To spotlight top fixtures, the league will feature marquee matchups each week, returning with the Walmart Saturday Showdown and Sunday Night Soccer broadcasts. The competition will showcase international stars such as Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Muller, and Evander alongside emerging young talents like Cavan Sullivan, Julian Hall, Adri Mehmeti, and Peyton Miller.

Playoff Changes and Rationale

The top eight teams from both the Eastern Conference and Western Conference will qualify for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, with every round utilizing a single-elimination format. While the specific playoff dates remain unannounced, the format replaces the current wild-card match and best-of-three series setup, addressing past criticisms regarding the length of the postseason. Maintaining playoffs ensures all five Concacaf Champions Cup qualification spots are determined before teams resume full participation in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The overarching schedule modification aligns MLS with the global transfer market. Operating the primary transfer window in the winter has historically hindered foreign clubs from sending players to American teams, while summer windows frequently pressured MLS sides to sell key players midseason. Although the shift introduces geographic challenges from harsh winter conditions, the league already manages summer extreme heat and thunderstorms across diverse climates. Furthermore, pausing league play during international windows prevents teams from losing top players, raising overall match quality.
