The Football Association and South Wales Police could be asked to investigate alleged homophobic chants directed from the stands during Newport County’s home match. The FA Cup first-round fixture between Newport and Walsall on Saturday saw a five-minute suspension in the second half ordered by referee Robert Massey-Ellis.
Match Disruption and Official Response
During the second half of the game, the match official paused proceedings and engaged in discussions with the managers and team captains. The referee appeared to gesture toward the home supporters situated near the dugout areas.
Because homophobic and discriminatory chants violate regulations set by the Football Association and are categorized as hate crimes, the club could potentially face a formal FA charge.
Manager Reaction
Newport manager Hayden Mullins stated following the match that while he personally did not hear any offensive language, such conduct has no business being in the sport. Mullins said it was homophobic language detected within the crowd, emphasized that the club does not condone it, and noted it was flagged to the stewards before reaching the assistant or fourth official.
Mullins added that the referee followed proper channels in addressing the situation thoroughly and ensuring the correct measures were implemented during the stoppage.
