Dan Lanning Delivers Best Coaching Job Amid Oregon Struggles

Despite Oregon facing a turbulent 2026 campaign that may fall short of its primary postseason goals, head coach Dan Lanning is delivering the finest coaching performance of his tenure, according to reporting by CBS Sports. The Ducks improved to 6-3 on the season following a 41-28 road victory over Ohio State on Saturday.

A Season of Setbacks and Quarterback Changes

Oregon entered the season with high expectations, but early struggles exposed key vulnerabilities. The team narrowly defeated Boise State in its opener before suffering an upset loss to Oklahoma State in Week 2. Prior concerns regarding internal promotions at both offensive and defensive coordinator positions materialized as both units struggled early in the year.

Adversity intensified during a matchup against USC, where starting quarterback Dante Moore sustained a season-ending injury while sliding. In his absence, high-profile transfer quarterback Dylan Raiola committed seven turnovers during a 17-15 loss to UCLA. The performance led to Raiola being temporarily benched for Brock Thomas against Nebraska, though Raiola later re-entered the game to direct a game-winning fourth-quarter drive.

Despite steadying to a 4-2 record, Oregon suffered its third defeat of the season before the end of October, falling to an Illinois squad that was forced to play a true freshman quarterback due to injuries.

Coaching Adjustments and Midseason Turnaround

Following the loss to Illinois, Lanning made a significant staff change by parting ways with offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer. CBS Sports noted that the move served as a pivotal turning point for a locker room that could have unraveled under the weight of early-season disappointments.

The Ducks responded the following week by overcoming a 14-point deficit to beat Northwestern 34-26. Against Ohio State at Ohio Stadium, Oregon again fell behind 14-0 early before surging back with 38 unanswered points. The Ducks built a 38-14 lead late in the contest before sealing the 41-28 victory.

With the offense showing improved rhythm under the revised leadership and the defense stabilizing over the past month, Oregon has positioned itself to finish the season strongly. The Ducks wrap up their regular season with home contests against Michigan and Washington, alongside a road trip to face 2-6 Michigan State.
